This is an anime (for those of you who don’t know “anime” just means a type of cartoon from Japan aimed at a teen-range audience), so it’s kind of hard to review with the normal formatting…
“Just as young archaeologist Syaoran is on the brink of telling his childhood friend Princess Sakura that he loves her, a magical occurrence causes Sakura’s memories to scatter. Now, Syaoran must travel from the Kingdom of Clow and across worlds seeking the shattered pieces of Sakura’s soul.”
Eh~ that’s an OK description of the show, I guess. Here is another, a little more thorough: Princess Sakura (sah-koo-rah) of the Kingdom of Clow is in love with the mysterious Syaoran (show-rhon) who was adopted by a traveling archaeologist when he was just a child with no memories of his previous life and a missing eye. Syaoran’s adopted father taught him to be kind and asked the Princess to be his friend. The two grew up close to each other and became inseparable, much to the dismay of Sakura’s brother, who eventually became a beloved young King. Syaoran is working in his father’s image to unearth some ancient ruins outside of the capitol of Clow when he is ready to confess his love for Sakura, and her for him. However, one night strange warriors appear in Clow and Sakura is drawn mysteriously into the ruins.
Syaoran follows her in, worried she will be hurt, and sees her being lifted into an engraving on the wall, pulled by translucent pink wings. He knocks her away before she is pulled in and the wings shatter. The princess does not regain consciousness and the head magician sends Syaoran and Sakura to Yuko, the time and space witch in another dimension.
Meanwhile, Kurgi (it’s not his name, I just forgot it and this is the nickname they call him to piss him off) is a violent warrior obsessed with becoming stronger. To protect her kingdom from him and in hopes of helping him, the princess he fights for imprisons him and sends him to Yuko. Fye, a powerful sorcerer, seals away his former master in a magical prison, knowing it isn’t strong enough and that he must flee his dimension in hopes of surviving. Fye, Kurgi, Sakura and Syaoran all arrive at Yuko’s door at the same time.
The witch offers to help send them to different dimensions, the idea being that in each one Syaoran must recover one of Sakura’s memories, which took the form of the feathers from the wings. Fye and Kurgi join on to protect him, Kurgi hoping it will lead him back to his own world. Without the memories Sakura will eventually die. Each person must give up something precious in payment, and Syaoran is forced to trade Sakura’s love, meaning any memory she has of him is altered so that she cannot remember who she was talking to or anything about him, and he can’t tell her. If she starts to remember their love that memory is taken from her mind.
As the group continues on their journey you learn more about what drove each of them down their respected paths, and also more about the strange duo who is watching Sakura and Syaoran through time and space, the ones behind the attack on Clow who are obsessed with seeing Sakura’s secret powers emerge.
It really isn’t too dull of a series. The reason I gave it low plot ratings was because basically you get a 4-5 episode mini story that ends with them finding a feather. It isn’t a very fast-paced series, and it’s kind of repetitive sometimes, but it’s not terrible. It’s more of a time-kill show.
I’m rating voice acting here. Most of the characters are OK, but especially with the characters in the mini stories there isn’t much variation. After a while all the guys sound the exact same and same with most of the girls. It’s kind of 2D in the voice department.
I’d recommend this to anyone 13-17, because I think that was the original target audience. The stories are simple, but not totally void of interest, and I think that age range will appreciate it more.
For those of you who can’t tell, I go where the MV’s can be found. Usually that’s YouTube, but I’ve also ventured though other sites to see what kinds of things the fans of these different groups like. I have a facebook page (and I admin 2 fan pages there), a twitter, this wordpress as well as another (mymaggiemoo@wordpress) and I’ve recently added a tumblr page to this mix (pretendthisiswitty@tumblr).
Namely on tumblr I’ve noticed the fans recent explosion over Super Junior M’s performance of “SuperGirl” on a program they recorded over a couple of days. The fans are angry that SJM performed the song, since it was during this song’s promotions that Hangeng, the former leader of SJM, filed suit against SM Entertainment and left the group suddenly.
I just wanted to voice my opinion, since I haven’t written a rant in a while and the fan’s anger over this really surprised me.
They seem to agree that performing the song with the new SJM was a kind of disrespect towards Hangeng, a kind of “we can do this without you”. I’m going to do the whole eyebrow raise and give you that look that let’s you know I think you’re being a little over zealous.
It’s not like this is the first time SuperGirl has been performed since Hangeng left. Super Junior performed it at the 2010 Gayo Daejun with 10 members, and I myself got to see it live when I went to SM Town Live in Seoul last August. They also performed it at Super Show 3, and are still performing it as Super Junior featuring Henry and ZhouMi. So what if Super Junior M performs the song? It’s their song, they are entitled to perform it. It’s not like Hangeng wrote the song.
And as far as the performance somehow being disrespectful to Hangeng, who cares? Should SJ also stop performing all the songs before “Bonamana”? Should SJM stop anything before “Too Perfect”? Hangeng left the group of his own free will, he wasn’t cast out. Why should they blacklist a song just because he was in it? SuperGirl was one of SJM’s biggest hits, if not their biggest yet. The promotions were cut short before fans got the full impact of the song, so what’s wrong if they perform it now? Hangeng has been caught lying to the fans and media about his relationship with Super Junior (he claimed they were all friends again and that Heechul even visited him while he was in Korea, but the members have repeatedly said he never contacted them) and yet they are coming under fire for performing a song.
Nothing against Hangeng, I have no opinion on the lawsuit, he did what he thought was necessary, who is to say any differently, but he’s moved on with his life and career, without forgetting where he started. Why can’t SJM? I just don’t understand why the fans are acting like it’s some huge slap in the face for them to perform their own song that they’ve been performing with SJ for months.
I’ve started this review like 4 times now, but technical difficulties with the MV keep stalling me~ But, late as it is, here is the review!
Think “Bonamana” and you’ve got the attitude of the song. The pace is a little different, but it’s still pretty great. The song is about being in love with someone and letting them know. They talk about the girl being “Too Perfect” in their eyes, like a vision, and how they won’t let anyone but them be by her side. It’s part a confession of love and part a description of how they plan to proceed with this love. There is a bit of confusion with some of the lines as to if they are calling the girl “too perfect” or saying they are too perfect in her eyes… I think the translation might be a little off. It has the same arrogant feel as “Sorry, Sorry” and “Bonamana”, and it’s just as addicting. I think it wasn’t written by the writer of those two other SJ hit songs, because he tends for repetitive feels, but it’s hard to say without hearing the Korean version.
“Being too impatient is wrong/ trying too hard for love will make it shatter/ Being too slow is wrong/ I’ll move forward or step back as you wish/ oh too perfect/ I appear in your eyes/ I won’t let anyone take my place by your side/ your brows and eyes/ your silhouette/ your neck and shoulders/ your charm/ your everything from head to toe/ I’ve already fallen for you”
This dance is a lot harder than anything Super Junior has attempted so far. It’s powerful and strong, and even watching the members in the background shows a higher level of skill. I think this might be because now 3/4 top dancers of the Super Junior family are together in one group: Henry, Donghae and Eunhyuk (Shindong is the only one missing).
Hangeng, the former leader of SJM specialized in ballet, and his dances tended to have a jazz kind of feel. A lot of SJM’s dances had the same slick feel, and this time the style seems to take after the stronger and more rugged approach of Eunhyuk and Henry (Donghae’s style follows the lyrics more).
There isn’t even a story in the set here. Everything is made to show off the members, and no shots are devoted to anything else. I like the sets they are on, and I understand why they chose to show off the members of SJM 2.0 rather than go for a story MV or anything.
There is a really cool scene where the members jump into the air and ZhouMi has his solo with them frozen around him. I think it was shot really well, and that’s got to be my favorite shot in the MV.
I’m not against Siwon or anything, let me start with that. I like that this MV doesn’t feature him as much as the other ones did. You see more Henry and Kyuhyun here, two members who tended to be pushed to the side (when they weren’t doing a solo). Siwon is featured heavily in the beginning (that old SJ superstition that if he starts a song it will do well), but you see more of the others.
I don’t like that they featured Eunhyuk so heavily. Again, I have nothing against him, but if they wanted to show off the new members they should have divided it between him and Sungmin more, or Donghae too. Sungmin tends to have the least face time in MV’s of SJ members, and I was kind of hoping to see him more here.
The hats… (sigh) why the hats… At least take ZhouMi’s.
Speaking of ZhouMi- someone please give him a sandwich? I swear that boy got skinnier, and I didn’t think that was possible.
I like Ryeowook a lot more in this MV. ONCE AGAIN (hopefully for the last time) I have nothing against him! He’s one of my favorites! I just think in this MV he really nailed the expressions and pulled off the tough guy look really well. Though not as well as Kyuhyun, I have to admit I was distracted by him even while writing this ^^
Guyliner. Yes. This was a good decision. (Thumbs up)
The MV has disappeared from SM Entertainment’s YouTube page (sment@youtube). I’m not sure what’s going on there, I can only assume they are releasing the Korean version soon- between the Chinese and Korean version they tend to have only one.
Sorry, it’s taken longer than I thought to get through all of the Welcoming stuff they do here at my university in Korea. Today we leave for a field trip and I won’t return until tomorrow night. But then I have 3 free days, so I promise to start reviews then. The first one will be of Super Junior- M’s “Too Perfect” (which I watch on repeat ^^ ).
Please be patient just a little longer!!! It’s a little difficult because I am the only returning student who has already arrived (the others stayed in Seoul at the other campus) and so I’ve been showing the other international students around and giving them tips on bus rides and fun places to go, I don’t see my room much~
I pinky promise!
See, in 2 days I fly back to Korea, so I’ve been spazzing getting everything ready (mostly getting my clothes back together).
Once I’m back there though I will be posting more. I’ve been really distracted by World of Warcraft recently, and I’m starting Starcraft soon as well…
Anyways, I’m vacationing in Seoul before going to campus, so I wouldn’t expect a review for the next week!
❤ you all~!
OK, this is my last update on this topic.
A Chinese director who will be filming a program featuring SJM (the one who let slip there were 8 members) listed the members at requests from fans. It is now CONFIRMED that the 2 new members of Super Junior- M are
Sungmin and Eunhyuk of Super Junior!!!
SJM will make their comeback any day now (according to Taiwanese sites February 14th is the date) so it’s time to sit back, relax, and wait to see this new SJM in action! I’m personally REALLY excited to see how it goes!
See? I didn’t forget I promised to let you guys know anything I’ve found out!
For those of you who have started reading here since I last posted: I kept getting questions on reviews and artist profiles for Super Junior about what would happen to Super Junior- M now that Hangeng is gone.
Super Junior M has CONFIRMED they are releasing an album “Very very soon”. When recording the album it accidentally got out that Sungmin (from Super Junior) was recording for the album as well. However, no one knows if he is a member or if he is just featured in a song.
Today a PD (production director) in China said SJM will be appearing on his show sometime in the future (they just got confirmation the group would be there) and that 8 members were coming. So it appears the rumors that SJ members will be added to SJM are true. Putting that with the bit about Sungmin accidentally being mentioned and it looks like he might be one of the 2 new SJM members. The last could be a trainee (SM has pleanty of Chinese trainees) or it could be a member of SJ.
SJM will make their comeback any day now, so fans should try to be patient. Keep an eye on SM Entertainment’s YouTube page or their website (www.smtown.com) for updates.
